Achievements

  • Served the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as an Institute President, Board Member and Executive Committee Member. Elected as President of two different national professional societies. (One was president of the Structural Engineering Institute and the other was president of the Masonry Society).
  • Selected as a Distinguished Member (aka Honorary Mbr.) of the ASCE. The Distinguished Member is the highest award that the ASCE can bestow out of the 140,000 members in that organization (fewer than one in a thousand ever receive this award).
  • The most significant office position was national president of the Structural Engineering Institute which occurred during the time of the 9/11 events, which also involved making the appointments of the investigative teams for World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon, national reviews of the reports, and numerous related presentations.
  • Served on the boards of six organizations, including the Board and Executive committee of American Society of Civil Engineers, and The Masonry Society (multiple terms). One of the more significant national combined technical and administrative roles has been as chair of multiple national codes and standards committees for three organizations, including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), The Masonry Society (TMS) and American Concrete Institute (ACI). One of the more significant of these responsibilities has been the Chair of a 120-member committee of the combined ASCE, TMS, and ACI Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures.
  • Chaired the Codes and Standards Activities Committee for ASCE for several years and was active in the development of the procedures for this activity which (even though modified from time to time) are still the basic procedures that are being followed. Currently, is serving as Chair of the FCAPS (Fiber Composite and Polymer Standards) Committee for ASCE/SEI.
  • Served several years as director of the Structural Engineering Laboratory and worked in the laboratory from 1967-2012.
