Jack Gethmann was the first construction engineering graduate of the program at Iowa State in 1963, and he earned an architectural engineering degree in the same year. He was instrumental in developing the construction engineering program.

 

After graduation, he started at Gethmann Construction Company and rose in the ranks to become president; he remained in that position until his retirement in 2007. Gethmann was active on many professional boards and committees, including Master Builders of Iowa, Associated General Contractors of America and Associated General Contractors of America. Even after his time at Iowa State as a student concluded, he remained active in the construction engineering program, developing courses and content. He also remained a member of the Memorial Union Board.
