Undergraduate students interested in graduate school and a career in the field of transportation engineering are encouraged to apply for Iowa State University’s Transportation Research Internship Program (TRIP).
To be held in summer 2015, TRIP is a unique initiative that provides students with the opportunity to participate in a high-impact, multidisciplinary program that integrates transportation research, education, and engineering practice. Students will gain firsthand research experience under the direction of internationally renowned transportation faculty. Students participating in TRIP will work on active research projects sponsored by agencies such as the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. These projects encompass a wide range of topics in areas such as the following:
- Asset management
- Big data transportation applications
- Intelligent transportation systems
- Naturalistic driving research
- Network modeling and optimization
- Statistical and econometric methods
- Traffic operations
- Transportation safety
The internship program runs from Monday, May 18, 2015, through Friday, August 14, 2015. Students are afforded flexibility in terms of start and end dates.
Interns will be assigned to ongoing transportation research projects and are expected to work 40 hours per week. Interns will receive a stipend of $2,000 each per month over the duration of the program. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of education and outreach activities conducted throughout the summer.
The internship is open to junior- or senior-level students currently enrolled in a civil engineering undergraduate program. Preference will be given to exceptional students who are seriously
considering pursuing a graduate education in transportation engineering. Only U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or students on F-1 visa status are eligible to apply.
To apply, please submit via email your resume, a one-page essay describing your interests and career goals, official transcripts, and the names and e-mail addresses of two references to Dr. Peter Savolainen. The deadline for application to the program is Friday, April 10, 2015. Selected TRIP participants will be notified of their acceptance no later than Friday, April 24, 2015.
