10 CCEE Professors, Alumni Named Among Top 150 Visionaries at Iowa State

In celebration of Iowa State University's 150th anniversary, VISIONS magazine editors have compiled a list of the top 150 visionaries in Iowa State history. The individuals on the list helped shape Iowa State and make it the university it is today. The following 10 former professors and alumni from the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) made the cut:

  • Henry Brunnier (BSCE 1904): Leader in earthquake-resistant structural design; designed many buildings and bridges on the West Coast; consultant to the construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
  • John (Jack) Cleasby (PhDCE 1960): Distinguished professor of civil and construction engineering; member of the National Academy of Engineering
  • John S. “Jack” Dodds: Civil engineering professor who established Camp Marston, a field camp for civil engineering students in northern Minnesota.
  • Mary “M.K.” Hurd (BSCE 1947): Author of seven editions of Formwork for Concrete, the “green bible” of the formwork industry.
  • Thomas H. MacDonald (BSCE 1904): Chief (and later commissioner) of the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads from 1919 to 1953; led the design of an integrated system of 3 ½ million miles of interlocking hard-surface highways that crisscrossed America.
  • Anson Marston: First dean of engineering; built Iowa State's engineering program to national prominence and established the first Engineering Experiment Station; helped develop Iowa's early road system.
  • Conde McCullough (BSCE 1910): Considered one of the most important bridge designers in U.S. history; designed historic bridges along the Oregon coast.
  • Elwood Mead (BSCE 1883): Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation during the construction of Hoover Dam; Lake Mead is named for him.
  • Col. Harold Pride (BSCE 1917): Longtime Memorial Union director; called “Mr. Memorial Union;” established a student assistance fund.
  • Merlin G. “Ib” Spangler (CE and ConE, BS 1919, MS 1928): International authority on underground conduits and sewer system design.
