Ames, Iowa -- Associate Professor David White has been named the inaugural recipient of the Waldo W. Wegner Professorship in Civil Engineering.
The professorship was established in 1991 when Iowa State University basketball legend and civil engineering alumnus Waldo Wegner (BSCE 1935) and his wife, Katie, committed a gift to Iowa State to fund an endowed professorship in civil engineering, a scholarship in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (now the College of Human Sciences), and a men’s basketball scholarship.
"I'm honored to be selected as the first recipient of this professorship," says White. "My goal is to use this professorship as a catalyst for inspiring undergraduate students to become more engaged in experimental research."
White received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1997, and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Iowa State University in 1999 and 2000, respectively. In January, White won the 2007 Arthur Casagrande Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers' Geo-Institute Board, and in 2005, he received the ISU Foundation Award for Early Achievement in Teaching.
White will serve in the new professorship for three years.
Wegner and his wife also established a scholarship in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (now the College of Human Sciences), and a men’s basketball scholarship.
