Ames, Iowa – More than 60 students and eight faculty from the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at Iowa State University competed Saturday in the department’s inaugural Ping Pong Tournament. After five and half hours of competition, Gladys Kwok, a sophomore in civil engineering from Hong Kong, was crowned the tournament’s winner.

“The purpose of the tournament was to have a social event where students could get to know each other and interact with professors out of the classroom,” says Matt Ludwig, senior in civil engineering and president of Iowa State’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter.

McClure Engineering Company, a firm that provides professional engineering services to municipal, county, state, and private clients in Iowa, Missouri, and Arizona, sponsored the event.

“We were excited to participate in a new and creative way to bring civil engineering students and faculty together outside of the classroom,” says Amie Lang, human resources director at McClure Engineering Company. “We think that it’s a great event for the CCEE department.”

McClure Engineering Company provided gift certificates for the top 16 winners of the event, including a $100 gift certificate to Best Buy for the tournament’s first place winner.

Several student organizations within the CCEE department, including ASCE, the Associated General Contractors of America, Design-Build Institute of America, and Chi Upsilon, organized the event. The Campus Baptist Church also assisted in sponsoring the tournament.
