1970s

Jeffrey Garrett (BSEng ’73; MSCE ’77; PhDCE ’03)
Green Oaks, Illinois
Garrett has been named to the position of president and chief executive officer of CTLGroup, a consulting firm providing engineering and scientific services to construction and related industries. He joined CTLGroup as senior principal structural engineer and group manager in 2001. Prior to that, he was senior managing engineer of Exponent Failure Analysis’ Chicago regional office and served in senior management positions at Hansen Lind Meyer.

1980s

Peter Pirillo (BSCE ’83)
College Park, Maryland
Pirillo has been promoted to the rank equivalent of U.S. Navy Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He is a USPHS representative and vice chairman of the Society of American Military Engineers’ International Committee and is planning to transition to civilian international engineering work, hoping to be based in Europe.

Des Moines, Iowa
Raker Rhodes Engineering has moved its offices to a new location on 42nd Street in Des Moines. The new address and phone number is 520 42nd Street, Suite 300, Des Moines, IA 50312, (515) 277-0275.

2000s

Frank Russo (PhDCE ’00)
Havertown, Pennsylvania
Russo is the project manager and lead author of the federal SHRP2 project on Innovative Bridge Designs for Rapid Renewal, a $2 million, four-year study. Iowa State University and the Bridge Engineering Center is a subcontractor on this project.

Travis Konda (PhDCE ’04)
Gulfport, Mississippi

Konda won the Eldon J. Yoder Award for Outstanding Paper for “Precast Modified Beam in Slab Bridge System: An Alternative Replacement for Low-Volume Roads” at the 2007 Transportation Research Board Low Volume Road Conference in Austin, Texas. The paper was based on research sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation and conducted by the Bridge Engineering Center at Iowa State. It was coauthored by Professors Terry Wipf and F. Wayne Klaiber, as well as Howard County Engineer Tom Schoellen (AAConE ’64).

Erik Johnson (BSConE ’06)
Phoenix, Arizona

Johnson graduated in December 2006 and started working as an assistant project manager at Opus West in Phoenix.
