Hoover Mentoring Workshop, Fall 2007

Hoover Mentoring Workshop Held in November

Engineering students and industry practitioners gathered at the second annual Hoover Mentoring Workshop in early November. The workshop is part of the activities of the James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering, an endowed professorship named for former CCEE faculty member James M. Hoover. Hoover was known for his dedication to teaching, researching, and mentoring.

At the workshop, representatives from Burns and McDonnell, Kiewit, and the Federal Highway Administration gave a presentation and participated in a panel discussion about best practices for mentoring interns and young engineers. Additionally, the keynote speaker—Carl Monismith, professor in civil and environmental engineering from the University of California-Berkeley—spoke about road test pavement research and the development of mechanistic-empirical pavement design.

The Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering and Hoover Mentoring Workshop were made possible by a gift from CCEE alumnus Craig Denny (BSCE ’71; MSCE ’73) and his wife Terry (BS Elementary Education ’72). Denny is a senior principal engineer at Terracon Consultants in Lenexa, Kansas. Vern Schaefer is the Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering.
