The James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering honors the memory of a long-time civil engineering faculty member at Iowa State University. Hoover mentored his students to help them realize their full potential. He had a profound influence on many people. The Hoover Mentoring Workshop was established to:

  • Motivate and inspire undergraduate and graduate students to realize their full potential
  • Encourage students to seek out a mentor
  • Invite practicing engineers to be mentors
  • Foster interaction between students, faculty, and practicing engineers
  • Provide resources to assist individuals in being good mentors and mentees
  • Host the James M. Hoover Lecture, an annual lecture by an eminent engineer
