Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

CCEE Offers Courses Through Distance Ed

You can now take CCEE graduate courses online through Engineering Distance Education (EDE). Distance education allows you to further your education while remaining at your current job or location. Online courses are flexible and convenient.

You do not need to be formally admitted into a degree or certificate program to take classes.

You can take classes as a non-degree student by simply filling out the online registration form on the EDE website. These credits can then transfer into a degree program later. Credits can also be applied towards professional development and graduate degree programs at Iowa State and at other colleges and universities.

How It Works

Courses are delivered to you using streaming media over the web, FTP download, or CD-ROM. The streaming media lectures may be watched live as they are being taught on campus, or the archived lectures may be watched at a more convenient time.

Courses Offered

In Spring 2006, three semester-long courses in the fields of construction engineering and environmental engineering will be offered through distance education:

  • CE 501: Preconstruction Project Engineering and Management (3 credits)
  • BRT 501: Fundamentals of Biorenewable Resources (3 credits)
  • CE/EnSci 571: Surface Water Hydrology (3 credits)

Two four-week courses will be offered in exploring stakeless grading and automatic machine control for earthmoving:

  • CE 594E: Project Controls (appropriate for people managing the process) (1 credit, begins January 12)
  • CE 594F: Computer Applications for Project Controls (appropriate for people who will actually execute the work) (1 credit, four-week course beginning February 9)

Graduate Certificate Available

Currently, you may earn a graduate certificate in environmental engineering completely online. The certificate allows you to improve your technical skills through advanced study without committing to a full master's program.
