Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Graduate Application Process

The graduate application process at Iowa State is "self-managed," which means that the applicant manages his/her own application.

Application Deadlines

The CCEE department has a rolling admissions process where we review applications throughout the year. For priority consideration for fall semester, however, applications should be submitted by February 1. For the spring semester, applications should be submitted by July 1.

International applications for the fall semester that arrive at the university after April 1 will be asked to delay admission until the spring semester. Applications for the spring semester that arrive at the university after August 1 will be asked to delay admission until the next fall semester.

Please remember that the admission process may take several months.

Important Points

Before you fill out your application, consider these important points:

    • A graduate applicant preferably should have a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or construction engineering. Some associated disciplines are accepted on a provisional basis and those applicants may be required take additional classes.
    • Applicants must have a class rank placing them in at least the upper 50% in their undergraduate class.
    • Applicants with records or scores that meet or exceed these guidelines are not guaranteed admission. Admission of qualified students also depends on a match between the student's area of interest and the research specialties of the faculty and the availability of professors.
    • Financial aid is usually considered only after an applicant is admitted to Iowa State University. Assistantships generally are not offered to students accepted on a provisional basis until after they complete any required prerequisite courses.
    • Iowa State University cannot process an application until it is complete, so please make sure the university has received all the materials for your application.
