Minors for Construction Engineers

By Noemi Perez, construction engineering student

To declare a minor, you must submit a completed Request for a Minor form (pdf), signed by your academic advisor, to your college classification office. Below you will find important information about the requirements to declare one of these three.

The most common minors for construction engineers are

  • Spanish
  • business
  • entrepreneurship

Spanish

A Spanish minor is helpful because many construction laborers speak Spanish. Learning Spanish will allow you to communicate with the laborers andl make you more competent in the professional world.

One of the great things about deciding to get a minor in Spanish is that you can start it right away and only requires 15 credits. The Languages and Cultures for Professionals minor has been tailored especially to meet the need of the professional world of engineering.

Business

Having a minor in business is very convenient and useful in the construction industry.

You must complete at least 30 credits, including business foundation courses and English 105, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 before you can declare the minor. You should also meet with a College of Business Academic Advisor to go over the program.

The general business minor consists of 21 credits beyond the business foundation courses. Some of the courses covered under the business minor are

  • Managerial Accounting (ACCT 285)
  • Principles of Finance ( FIN 301)
  • Management of Organizations ( MGMT 370)

Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurial Studies minor serves to complement your major area of study. This program helps you know what it takes to start a new venture. This program covers some marketing and finance concepts but is not a substitution of the business minor. The learning community invites entrepreneurs to come and talk about their experiences and have a discussion on related topics.

There is an entrepreneurship learning community and an entrepreneur club as well.
